Southern’s Chris Davis and Deidra Jackson picked up more postseason hardware, each earning spots on the Louisiana Sports Writers Association’s All-Louisiana team.
Davis, the Jags’ do-everything scoring machine for the men’s basketball team, was named to the Louisiana Sportswriters Association second team. Jackson, the lone senior from the SU women’s team, was named to her second straight All-Louisiana team.
Davis, a Baton Rouge native, led or tied for the lead in scoring 24 times, 18 times in assists and 12 times in steals. The Istrouma product was named third-team All-Southwestern Athletic Conference after averaging 14.8 points, 4.2 rebounds, 3.2 assists and 1.23 steals per game in the 2008-09 season.
Davis finished the season tied for fourth in the SWAC in scoring and third in three-point shooting (39.1 percent). Davis also led the Jaguars in minutes played, logging in 987 total minutes for an average of nearly 33 minutes per game. His best game was a 26-point performance at home against Jackson State Feb. 9.
Jackson, an Amite native, lead the team in scoring with 12.2 points per game after 30 contests. Jackson finished the year fifth in the conference in scoring, fifth in field-goal percentage (33.2 percent) and fifth in free-throw percentage (75.8 percent). The former All-Louisiana All-Star led the team in minutes played with 871 averaging 29 per game. She dropped 22 points in her best game this season, against Alabama State on Feb. 21.
Jackson ends her career on The Bluff with two All-Louisiana selections and a SWAC first-team nod.
The team was selected following nominations from the four-year basketball playing institutions in the state and then a panel of LSWA members were asked to select their top 15 players with the top player receiving 15 points down to one. From those point totals, three-five member teams were selected and then members picked the top choice for the special awards.
