Southern University softball coach Nancy Marshall will have to continue to find ways to improve on defense after being swept 2-0 in Saturday’s doubleheader game against Louisiana College at Lady Jaguar field.
Heading into the header SU looked to improve on defense, suffering a 7-1 beating in their home opener against Nicholls State.
And it almost seemed SU would have to play a perfect game to take down the number three ranked Division III team in the country.
Game one only lasted 40 minutes due to the mercy rule enforced by NCAA officials. The Tiger’s slugged their way to a 16-5 victory through five innings before picking up an 8-3 win in game two.
“As a team we did not show up to play,” said Aruba Nicholas. “We have to show up in tough moments.”
SU lead 1-0 in the first inning of game one but never saw it again. The Tiger’s scored eight runs in the second inning and added six in the third.
The LC defense held SU to just six hits, with five strikeouts throughout the contest. SU’s defense was unable to come up with stops giving up 14 runs, 11 hits and six errors in back-to-back innings. Junior Chastoni Jones led SU with two hits, three runs, and a homer in the fourth inning.
“We lost the will to fight back having to play from behind throughout the game,” said Jones. “As a team we were not mentally focused.”
SU looked to bounce back in game two but were unable to do so allowing eight runs in the first four innings.
SU totaled two runs of their own in the fourth inning when senior Lauren Dodd hit a two-run homerun over the center field wall. Dodd finished the day batting .286 with two hits and one run.
Nicholas led the Jags at the plate, batting .429 with three hits and two runs.
Pitcher Layana Jenkins was unable to play, suffering a kidney injury. Jenkins’ return is undetermined.
SU (5-7) travels to Hattiesburg, Miss., to compete in a Southwestern
Athletic Conference softball roundup March 6-8.
