An address by Southern University alumnus retired U.S. Army Lt. Gen. Russel Honore’ will highlight Founders’ Day activities this weekend as the institution celebrates its 129-year history.
The celebration, themed “Sharing Our Legacy, Shaping Our Future,” starts Saturday with a National Alumni Federation Founders’ Day Gala, at 7 p.m., in the Royal Cotillion Ballroom of the Smith-Brown Memorial Union. Founders’ Day will be the topic of a special edition of “Inside the Southern University System Radio Show” at 6 p.m. on Sunday on WEMX 94.1 FM. Listeners can also stream the show online at www.max94one.com.
Festivities begin Monday with a Community Prayer Breakfast at 7:30 a.m. in the Royal Cotillion Ballroom. Several area ministers will offer prayers for the SU campus, administrators, faculty, staff and students.
Southern Laboratory School students will hold their Annual Pilgrimage and Founders’ Day Ceremony at 8:30 a.m., following the breakfast, at the Clarks’ Gravesite on the campus.
The historical video, “SU: The Legacy of Excellence,” which focuses on the history of Southern University, will be shown at 10 a.m., in the Felton G. Clark Activity Center.
Lt. Gen. Honore’ will deliver the keynote address at the Founders’ Day Convocation, at 10:30 a.m., also in the Felton G. Clark Activity Center. Honore’ was widely praise for his command of the Joint Task Force- Katrina, in which he led the Department of Defense’s response team in the aftermath of Hurricanes Katrina and Rita.
Several of his prior commands include: Commanding General, 2d Infantry Division, Korea; Vice Director for Operations, J-3, The Joint Staff, Washington D.C.; Deputy Commanding General/Assistant Commandant, United States Army Infantry Center and School, Fort Benning, Ga. and the Assistant Division Commander, Maneuver/Support, 1st Cavalry Division, Fort Hood, Texas.
The Southern University Museum of Art (SUMA) and the John B. Cade Library are also hosting historical art exhibits. SUMA is hosting the exhibit, “The Awful Truth: The Ugly Legacy of Lynching in America.” The SU library is hosting its’ Founders’ Day exhibit featuring photos of the university’s founders, their biographies and information on Historical Black Colleges and Universities. The library exhibit will be displayed until the end of March.
