SU baseball home opener rescheduled
Wednesday’s scheduled home opening baseball game between Southern and Southeastern, has been moved to Hammond, and will now take place at Pat Kenelly Diamond at Alumni Field on the Southeastern campus, with a 6 p.m. first pitch.
The April 22 contest between the Lions and Jaguars (originally scheduled for 6 p.m. in Hammond) has been moved to Lee-Hines Field in Baton Rouge on the Southern campus. With the move, Southern’s first game at Lee-Hines Field becomes March 14 against Arkansas-Pine Bluff in Southwestern Athletic Conference play.
The Jaguars took two out of three against Prairie View in a key SWAC series over the weekend.
SU women’s tennis team finish roundup perfect
As competition in SWAC East-West Tennis Roundup ended on Sunday, the women of Southern and men of Grambling State and Arkansas-Pine Bluff will return home with unblemished records from the tournament.
The Southern University women held off Jackson State in an intense 4-3 match on Sunday to maintain their perfect 5-0 record for the roundup. The Jaguars were the only undefeated women’s team in the competition.
Grambling State and Prairie View A&M only suffered one loss throughout the weekend as they both posted 4-1 records. Alabama A&M, Alcorn State and Jackson State leave the tournament at .500 having recorded 2-2 slates. Alabama State (1-3), Mississippi Valley State (1-3) and Arkansas-Pine Bluff (1-4) each exit the event with one win.
In men’s action, both Grambling State and UAPB won matches today to remain undefeated at 5-0 in the tournament. Prairie View A&M only endured one loss in the roundup, going 4-1 while Southern registered a 3-2 record. Alcorn State didn’t compete on Sunday so they remain at 2-2 for the weekend. Jackson State (1-3) managed one win during the tournament and Alabama A&M (0-4), Alabama State (0-4) and Mississippi Valley (0-4) all leave the event without a victory.
