The “War on Terror” has been, and will continue to be, something that will dominate the headlines in this country for years to come. And given the disclosure of President Bush’s strategy last week, it seems as if more of our friends, siblings and loved ones may soon become apart of the more than 20,000 troops Bush said he needed to “clean up his mess.”
Our objective in staff editorials is to present a unified argument to our readers on issues we feel is relevant to our generation. But when it came time to hash out our feelings with one another, we were drawn to one conclusion. We, like many Americans, are torn between the issues this war has presented to us. Some of us feel the war is full of “you know what.” And there were those of us who felt it was necessary to defend American soil.
However, there are some issues surrounding this war we do agree on. The idea of pulling out now is unrealistic and improbable. Wheels have been set in motion and now must turn until they fall off. We want our troops to come home, but of course that too is unlikely being there is a job which must be finished. Since September 11, we have come to realize the “War on Terror” is complicated and has been canvassed by shady politicians with dishonest intentions. So dishonest it has become complicated to point fingers and find out who’s to blame for the senseless deaths of thousands of Americans.
One thing is for certain to us, the “War on Terror” may never be over because it’s a battle that can truly never be won. What this war has done is place more fear and paranoia in the hearts and minds of us all. For every car bomb that goes off in the Middle East, it seems as if we lose another personal freedom here the government deems necessary to keep us safe from terrorists.
Bush has made his bed, now we Americans must lie in his mess. And his mess is sticky and diseased with the blood of the innocent and the deceit from sins of the past. What are we to do when it feels as if we’ve been handcuffed to the bed and left to die like a character in a Stephen King novel? Yes we may have the militant little soldiers and the big guns now, but isn’t there always somebody else out there with bigger guns and stronger soldiers? It’s becoming clear that we may be in over our heads because although we may talk a good game, some countries aren’t afraid of us and they are ready to challenge the “world’s greatest superpower.”
Right now, we as young college Americans are consumed with thoughts of graduation and the pursuit of our own American dreams, but our dreams may soon be a nightmare if this country continues on with a fight that can never be truly won. It’s time to start thinking about how this war will shape our future. Will there be any future worth having for our kids? Are we doomed to live in a world where we might have to walk through metal detectors just to use the restroom and be subjected to cell phone wire taps just because we’re married to a Muslim?
Saddam is dead, but we still have one question, where is Bin Landen? Wasn’t he the reason this all started anyway?
