HUNTSVILLE, Ala.- When you go against bulldogs you have two choices, either “blow them out” or get “bulldozed.”
The Jaguars of the Southern University’s women’s basketball team chose the latter.
On Monday night, at Elmore Gymnasium, they were bulldozed by the Lady Bulldogs of Alabama A& M, whom presently lead the Southwestern Athletic Conference.
Southern (2-14, 2-6) allowed A &M (11-7, 7-0) the first 12 points of the game, which ultimately led to their 56-40 defeat.
“Poor execution in our half-court offense, No. 1,” Southern coach Sandy Pugh said. “We weren’t getting the ball reversed, no movement and too many turnovers.”
Even though the Lady Bulldogs head coach Altherias Warmley was pleased with the victory, she was not elated with the initial execution of her team.
“I thought they would have come out a little harder,” Warmley said. “We scored easy the first few minutes of the game, but we didn’t push it the way we wanted to push it and we didn’t pressure the way we wanted to pressure. I didn’t see the fight that I’m used to seeing from them.”
Forward Tamika Green led A&M with 16 points. Guard Christian Malone finished with 12 points and five assists, while guard Felicia Drummond had a double-double of 10 points and 10 rebounds.
Forward Krystal Huggins led Southern with 14 points and Center, Fredrieka Lewis added 12.
Overall Pugh was disappointed with the nonexistent effort of the Jaguars.
“Our kids did not bring the level of offensive effort,” Pugh said. “We got out hustled. We didn’t play Southern-caliber basketball.”
On Saturday, Jan. 27, the Jaguars will travel to Lorman, Miss. to play Alcorn State at 5:30 p.m.
