The Student Government Associationis gearing up with an exciting year of holistic programming for the students of Southern University.
The programming is geared toward the act of restoring Jaguar Pride, a daunting task that SGA President Carey Ash is taking on with great humility. Ash said this academic year SGA is focused on improving school spirit. Although he prefers for the plans to be secret in order to surprise the students, Ash’s promises to revitalize that old Jaguar spirit with, “I Love SU Fridays”.
Ash also remarked that, “my entire platform was complete before the academic school year began, this is something that no other SGA President has accomplished.”
Ash has begun a textbook assistance program, which enables students to checkout various textbook for the semester in the John B. Cade Library; utilizing blackboard to communicate with the student body on important announcements; and has gotten dead days implemented in the academic calendar.
Ash, in addition, has started contacting local community businesses with the hopes of getting the Scottlandville area involved with the institution. This has begun with Subwayoffering fifteen percent off to all students on Mondays.
Stasha Rhodes, President Pro Temp of the Student Senate said from a legislative perspective, “I look forward to working with an active and vivacious senate.” And Rhodes isexcited at the fact that, “Student Government Association is putting the students first under the leadership of President Carey Ash.”
These new ideas have not overshadowed the past programming that the students of S.U. are accustom to. Reuben Griffin, Chairman of the SGA Board, said, “the activities board was instituted in order to help to manage all activities among all student organizations.” Griffin asserts that, “the programming this year will be of more substance and should allow for consistency in the programming of student organizations.”
The new policy, according to Griffin, will not allow for the scheduling calendar to be filled with events and deprive the students from choosing one event in lieu of another. Griffin said that, “students should be receiving positive programming in order to prepare them for post-graduation” a task he and his committee seem well prepared for.
As the remnants of a past SGA administration are being steered in a different direction it is quite evident that even the physical make up of the SGA office has changed. New paint, new carpet, and a smiling receptionist are evidence of a new administration taking the helm of leadership. The new SGA president put it best by saying, “it’s a great day to be a student at Southern University.”
