Southern University’s held a grand opening of its newest male dormitory, Ulysses Sully Jones Hall, on July 24, 2007 in a ribbon cutting ceremony. The dorm has made quite the positive impact on Baton Rouge campus.
According to Marilyn Hill, housing director, it is the first new dormitory for men since 1957. Renovations were completed in Gradison and Bradford Hall in 1991.
The price to build the Ulysses dorm was $13,337,146 according Jermaine Meyers, facilities business planner.
The cost of a room and board in the new facility is $ 1,587 per student each semester, and houses a capacity of 376 students.
The tuition cost difference to other dorms is $708 more than Reed and White Hall that cost $879 per semester, with three students per room. Ulysses cost is $1,587 at two per room and Bradford Hall costing $1,035 at two per room. J.S. Jones Hall is $984 at two per room.
Hill, joyfully stated, “We are very proud to offer students a chance to live in a first class facility.”
She goes on to say that the facility is completed, open, and fully occupied.
Hill also described the dorm as a more modern style, with the same amenities as Shade and Totty Halls, accommodated with kitchenette, a double sided sink area in the suite, a refrigerator and microwave.
The residence hall is secured by a first class surveillance system and the dorms are monitored by the SU Police Department. Ulysses has an evacuation route to assist the residents clear out in case of emergency or fire.
“There will be periodic room inspections to ensure the maintenance and up keeping of the dorm, however we ask the Ulysses Jones Hall residents to work with us to maintain great condition of the facility,” said Hill, affirmatively to guarantee satisfaction and upkeep of the new dorm.
Upper class male students have first priority, but the dorm is open to freshman males.
“Just fill out an application ,”said Hill.
Jerry Jones, senior from Alexandria, and a Ulysses Hall residential assistant complimented that the atmosphere in the new Ulysses Jones Hall is “great, new, comfortable and at home.”
“I see much more respect to the building and seems like the guys appreciate the new facility,” said Jones.
Jones goes on to say that the elevators and clean bathrooms also make the living great and commends the maintenance staff on getting the cable and Internet up and running.
“No more worrying about the air conditioning breaking down and hauling refrigerators and televisions up and down the stairs,” said Gabriel Smith a junior from Opelousas.
Many residents stated that the dorm is a wonderful and beneficial asset to Southern University now and years to come.
