Most students do not know about the many non-greek organizations on Southern University campus. It seems as if the only way the students will know about these organizations, if they were to do research on them or even be interested in joining one.
If the students wanted to go about joining these organizations they would need to go to the Student Union. The Student Programs Office in room 203 on the second floor. The office can provide you with the information needed about the organization and even provide you with the president’s name, the advisor’s name, and even the contact number of the advisor, so if you need any more information you can call them. There is also a list of all the organizations on campus in the school’s catalog.
There are 33 non-Greek academic organizations and eight service non-Greek organizations on Southern’s campus.
The majority of them belong to a specific department on campus.
For example, the organization called Phi Alpha Honor Society is specifically for students in the Social Work department. All these organizations have in common the fact that they are either academic greeks or service greek organizations.
Currently of the 33 non-Greek academic organizations, only 16 have officially registered this year. The groups need to stop by the Student Programs Office to update their organizations registration to be active on the campus.
“For the 2006-07 school year there were only 16 registered non-greek student organizations on campus,” said Twyana Cain, Coordinator of the Office of Student Programs. “You must have 2.5 GPA to join one these organizations.”
