Read a book, brush your teeth, buy some land, deodorant, and take care of your kids. If you have watched BET lately you have heard these Lil Jon type lyrics on all your favorite video shows. Is this what BET feels is the best way to get a message across? Is this how they want to teach our youth? Black people everywhere are outraged, and they should be, but who is really to blame?
Humor me for a while…
I’m going on a limb and assume that BET has as much sense as me. Enough sense to know that if you disrespect your mass viewers, your station’s future will be short lived. It’s safe to say, if they thought this was going to sit well with blacks, and that we would find it entertaining, their burial plot is already paid for, and they have already booked Steve Harvey for the eulogy.
Like most watchers, when I first saw this music video, I was infuriated. Then I became vexed. Why would this prominent black station do something so suicidal? Is this the same station that gave starts to Jackie Reid and Tavis Smiley that have stooped so low as to insult the working class blacks that have remained loyal, even though the evidence that BET has lost its informative touch is overwhelming? As I thought about this, my phone rang. For relative purposes (since everyone doesn’t know about hyphy music) I’m going to say “Wipe Me Down” was playing, and I realized what BET was trying to prove.
If you look on Billboards right now, the top rap songs are “Shawty” by Plies, “Crank That” by Soulja Boy, “A Bay Bay” by Hurricane Chris, and “Big Things Poppin'” by T.I. Do you still not get the trend? Each one of these songs is a chant of degrading themes gaining proponents of colossal numbers of all races. What is being broadcasted to the mass media is that this is black culture. This is our contribution to the world of music right now.
My mother used to tell me all the time if only I could learn everything else the way I learned music. It’s true, I can hear a song possibly five times and have it memorized, and recite it word for word. Our brains subconsciously embed in our long term memories every song we hear. So why then do we want in our permanent memories chants of negativity and degradation?
BET has taken the step to acknowledge the state of Hip Hop today, and the terror alert is red! They have pointed out that in music today, ignorance is being glorified. In case you missed it let me reiterate this point: IGNORANCE IS BEING GLORIFIED! We are living off music. Everyday language is a result of the songs we hear. We no longer have the freedom of dance because the song is telling us what to do. If there is anything to be offended off of, look at the songs we listen to today.
I’m just as guilty. Maybe I need to “Read a Book”…
