Although all of the above events are wonderful, I would be mistaken if I did not mention the event that occurred on last week. This past Thursday, the Student Government Association had the opportunity to take a delegation of students to Jena, Louisiana to rally in support of the protection of due process and civil rights as it pertained to Mychal Bell and the Jena 6. The day was filled with guest speakers such as the Reverends Jesse Jackson and Al Sharpton, as well as radio personality, Michael Baisden. With the highlight of the day being a march from the LaSalle Parish Courthouse, down past Jena High School where the reprehensible events occurred, the students of Southern University at Baton Rouge proved to the world that we will not tolerate inequity; that an injustice anywhere is an injustice everywhere. Special thanks for the opportunity to travel to Jena are extended to System President, Dr. Ralph Slaughter, Interim Chancellor, Mrs. Margaret Ambrose, Interim Vice-Chancellor, Mrs. Lynn Dickerson, and Aramark Food Services for all their assistance. Further, special recognition is sent to Mr. Toussaint Pierre of Iota Phi Theta Fraternity, Incorporated for his brilliant coordinating of the events of “Jena 6 Week”, as well as to Mr. Juvon Pollard and the members of Kappa Alpha Psi, Fraternity, Incorporated for their efforts to support the cause by attempting to secure vehicles to transport students. Members of the Jaguar nation, good luck on your mid-term exams this week! If nothing else, the promise of a great homecoming will keep us going!!
Still moving in the right direction,
