A more mature style of living for Southern University Baton Rouge campus students is right around the corner and will be available for the spring semester.
Construction for the new apartment-style dorms will be concluded on December 1, 2007.
On Monday, Oct. 22 from 3 to 7 p.m., there will be an open house for students to come out and view the dorms.
There will be food and drinks available to students, faculty and staff. In addition, an appearance will be made by Cool D.J. Supa Mike of Q-106,
The dorms will be fully furnished with bedroom dressers and nightstands, as well as sofas and the living room and common areas.
The kitchen and bathroom areas will feature marble counter and double vanity sink in the bathrooms, The kitchen area will be equipped with all standard appliances including a refrigerators, stoves, microwaves and ovens
According to Ernie Hughes, Executive Director of Southern University System Foundation, the apartments are part of the $60 million project, with $24 million for the apartment style dorm construction.
The entire unit will consist of four buildings with three floors each. The one bed room apartments will consist of eight units with eight beds, two bedrooms has 80 units with 160 beds and four bedrooms has 108 units and 432 beds.
There will be 178 units, 178,000 square feet and the dorms will consist of 600 beds.
Students will have the option to select three types of units, starting with the one-bedroom/one bath, 469 square feet for $3250 per semester. The two-bedroom/two bath, 614 square feet is priced at $2600 and four-bedroom/two bath, 1024 square feet being $2100 per semester, respectively.
According to Hughes, the students who reside there will benefit by having their own room because of the privacy it offers.
Instead of traditional dorm keys, tudents will enjoy the luxury of modern technology by having a key card to get into his or her apartment.
The Southern University Police Department will monitor the dorms and each apartment will be equipped with a sprinkler system.The apartments will also have an area for residents to do laundry.
The fees to reside at the apartment style dorms will come out of tuition.
“Only if we would have had them about two years ago,” stated Jeremy Dixon, a 21-year-old junior from Natchez Miss.
According to Hughes, construction will not stop with the the completion of the dorms in December, but continue with the other projects to improve housing on the campus.
“We really want to make like a college town where people won’t know where the University begins or ends,” said Hughes.”Its going to happen within years to come.”
