The Homecoming concert is one of the most anticipated events during Homecoming week.
The performing artists were well received based on the reactions of the crowd.
Before the concert, long lines wrapped around the F.G. Clark Activity Center.
This was in great part due to security procedures.
During the concert, security guards stood around the outskirts of the students monitoring the crowd and keeping random students from drifting backstage.
Tight security did not hinder the excitement of a crowd of 2,356 fans.
Tony King and Sashika of Max 94.1 hosted the concert and kept the crowd pumped up between performances.
“It’s cool because you get the chance to feel all the love Southern University students have,” said King.
Sashika also mentioned that hosting was a great experience.
Rashad “Il Duce” Davis, an artist who attends Southern, opened up the concert and was followed by a performance from Rich Boy.
“I’m currently working on my second album,” said Rich Boy prior to his performance.
He also mentioned that he felt privileged to perform and be a part of college activities.
Performances by Foxx and Webbie really stirred up the crowd.
Students belted out lyrics and danced while these two Baton Rouge natives performed songs such as “Wipe Me Down” and “Independent.”
“It feels good,” said Webbie when asked how it felt to perform here in Baton Rouge.
Lloyd, who got his first record deal at the age of 10, was the R&B relief to a hip-hop production.
“He brought a lot of energy,” said Keonna LeBlanc, a freshman computer science major from Bunkie.
“His show was basically for the girls,” added LeBlanc.
Lloyd danced across the stage while belting out several songs.
At one point, he even brought a young lady from the crowd onto the stage and sang to her.
“As a reflection to my generation, I hope to be an example that dreams do come true,” said Lloyd in an interview following his performance.
He also mentioned that since stardom, he has grown in more ways than one.
“I have a stronger work ethic and a stronger will to be the hardest worker,” said Lloyd.
Young Joc headlined Thursday’s concert.
“I’m opening up a chain of restaurants called Bottoms Up,” said Young Joc. “I’m also investing in moist toilet wipes.”
He added that he was happy to be a part of the concert.
The concert received mixed reviews. Some students that were interviewed felt as if Lloyd was their favorite performer while others felt that Young Joc stole the show.
“Webbie and Foxx were my favorite performers because the girls went a little too crazy over Lloyd; I didn’t really like Young Joc,” said Jeremy Richardson, a freshman business management major from Opelousas.
“I’m looking forward to next year’s concert, and I hope to open up,” adds Richardson.
