Laughter was everlasting in the F.G. Clark Activity Center during the SU Homecoming Comedy Show. The turn out was great, and since it was available to non-Southern University students to purchase tickets, this really expanded the crowd.
The show consisted of the host Rob Stapleton, Dominique, and main headliner, Tony Roberts.
“I hate college students,” said Roberts jokingly as he prepared for his act. “I like performing in front of college students because they think they know everything, so it makes it harder for me to come up with material.”
Since many college students tune into Comic View, Roberts said that it becomes a challenge and have to make sure the material they present is fresh because college students have a great memory.
The comedians made contact with the students very well, especially those who shouted out to the comedians. Some students thought they were clever by throwing out words to get the comedian’s attention, and they did, but not in a good way.
“I don’t think that some people understand that they are professionals,” laughingly said Linda Smith, a senior early childhood development major from New Orleans. “They will come back with something even better, but the show overall was very funny and I enjoyed it.”
A Houston native and Mass Communication major Shakethia Robertson enjoyed the show.
“I really enjoyed it except for the people yelling out in the middle of the show, but it was a really good show.”
The comedians plan on making other special appearances at 20 other colleges, besides Southern University. Dominique has been here once before and says that she loves coming back for more.
“It was fun, I really enjoyed it especially when it is at a HBCU,” said Dominique. Dominique supports all HBCUs and since she didn’t have the privilege to attend one.
“I don’t like how they never talk about our black college students in the media and how they are doing well and I am very proud to see everyone at the show coming out and having fun because I know that they are doing a good job by staying in school,” said Dominique.
As with most comedy shows, the comedians will pick on the student in the front row. Students that sat at the front were prepared for the comedians whom target the those closest to the stage.
Every year students sit in the front row ready to get picked on, while others will either not sit close to the stage or will just hope that they don’t get picked on.
Most students left the show satisfied with this year’s comedians.
The show became a hit success, especially the fact that many were still talking about the show afterwards.
“The best part about the show was how they can make jokes off the spot about people,” said senior criminal justice major, Jarel Small from Wichita, Kan
