The pep rally held for this weekend’s game against Alabama A&M University was truly indicative of the theme, “Jaguar Pride…Catch It!”
The turnout at the pep rally made it quite evident why the Southern University Jaguars’ football team is undefeated. The amount of school spirit displayed exemplified that the Jags do not plan on losing. Blue and gold pom poms filled the air, and the school mascot danced to every song, further exciting the crowd.
“It’s been a long time since we had this kind of school spirit” said Head Football Coach Pete Richardson.
Homecoming festivities coupled with returning alumni sent a clear sign that “SU Spirit” is alive. The character displayed by members of the Jaguar family and the attendance of the local radio station served as a sign that this homecoming week can only get better.
“Southern University is known for producing some of the most talented engineers, nurses, and the Human Jukebox,” said Tony King, the emcee representative from Max 94.1 FM.
It was also obvious that a pep rally would not have been a pep rally without the Southern University Marching Band present. The Human Jukebox and the Southern University Dancing Dolls seemed to make the crowd come alive with their arrival at the F.G Clark Activity Center.
The Jukebox entered playing the spirit song and continued to excite the crowd by playing songs such as the “Cupid Shuffle” and “Do What You Wanna.” In addition, the Southern University cheerleaders along with the Gold’N Bluez dancers, the Jaguar Gold, and a variety of other student dance groups performed.
“The pep rally was good, but a lot of people were not as hyped up as I expected, although the Gold’ N Bluez Dancers were awesome,” said Domonique Anderson, a freshmen majoring in business management from Atlanta.
Many students were pleased with the outcome of the festivities, especially the dance teams.
The performances were a testimony to the individuals who attend this institution of higher education.
The students were pleased with the pep rally and look forward to Saturday’s game.
“This year’s homecoming week has truly been a unique one, and since the football team is 5-0, the school spirit has set the stage to a great atmosphere,” said SGA Chief Justice Johnathan Hill, a senior business management major from Baton Rouge.
If the excitement at the pep rally is any indication in the spirit displayed at the game, then it will be a very memorable homecoming.
