The most anticipated Homecoming event of the week was the Southern University Homecoming National Pan-Hellenic Greek Show, which drew a crowd of 4,061 fans. The greek show was quite competitive, and it aroused the audience of both Greek and non-Greek attendees feelings of Jaguar Pride.
“When I was in school, we had good greek shows, quality greek shows; I mean we were really good. I hope tonight’s greek show will live up to my exceptions, I want to see quality performances,” said Glenda James, a member of Delta Sigma Theta Soroity, Inc., and Jaguar Alumni of 1962.
The Greek Show took place at the F.G. Clark Activity Center and began at 7:30 p.m. The impending competition was that of much excitement and anticipation among both spectators and competitors.
As the competition began the audience watched as Terral C. Jackson Jr., Director of the Student Union, moderated, and radio presonality Cool DJ Super Mike of Max 94.1 FM disk jockeyed during every interval of the step show.
At the end of the night ties speckled the score sheets. The winners for the 2007 Homecoming Greek Show were Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc., and Zeta Phi Beta Sorority, Inc., tying for first place and Phi Beta Sigma Fraternity, Inc., won first place for the males.
Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc., and Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity Inc. tied for second.
“There is so much energy in here I am so excited and can’t wait to see the Greeks perform, I just feel good to be back and I also feel good to be here,” said Antawn Richardson, Alumni of 2003.
In addition, the many alumni present in the F.G. Clark Activity Center reminisced about past Greek shows, especially those step shows during their tenure at Southern University.
Henry Clay, class of 1958, and member of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc., said he wanted the Greek Show to be tasteful and pleasurable.
Current Southern students also poured in to support their colleagues and enjoy the show.
“I am here to support my friends they are Deltas, and I am basically rooting for them, but I do want to see what everybody else has to offer. My highest expectation is to enjoy the show,” said Ashleigh Simon, a sophomore speech communications major.
Phi Mu Alpha Sinfonia, a music fraternity, was the first performance of the evening, and awed the audience with their rendition of “The National Anthem.”
“They sound hot, I have never heard them before, but they really sound good,” said Terrance Ford, LSU sophomore general studies major, speaking highly of the music fraternity.
Kappa Kappa Psi, the honorary band service fraternity provided the audience with comedic relief as in addition to rewarding performance.
Last exhibition shows were The Blue and Gold Dancers with the addition of the Legacy Dancers from LSU.
“It was cool getting to see them, I wish they would perform more often,” said Chris Jackson, senior marketing major.
Phi Beta Sigma Fraternity, Inc., was the first of the Pan-Hellenic Greeks to perform, and did so with coordination and organization.
Iota Phi Theta Fraternity, Inc., followed displayed a traditional step show.
The next performance was by Delta Sigma Theta Sorority Inc., who graced the stage with creativity and confidence.
The men of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc., took center stage. They excited the crowd by doing a signature Michael Jackson dance move to “Don’t Stop Till You Get Enough.”
“I expect the Alpha’s to win, we always perform to the best of our abilities. We were fresh and smooth. We had a couple of mess-ups but we were still good,” said Jeremy Jones, a Jaguar alumni of 2006 said of his fraternity brothers.
Members of Kappa Alpha Psi with their signature red and white canes came to the stage next.
Closing the night out the members Zeta Phi Beta Sorority, Inc. Delta Sigma Theta, Zeta Phi Beta and Phi Beta Sigma will represent Southern at the Bayou Classic Greek Show against Grambling State’s winners in November.
