Governor Kathleen Babineaux Blanco Thursday announced the appointments of E. Jean Ware, Herman L. Hartman, Jr., Mary R. Doucet, and Samuel C. Tolbert, Jr. to the Board of Supervisors for the Southern University System.
“These individuals represent the best our state has to offer,” Governor Blanco said. “They bring a wealth of experience in education, administration, and community leadership to the board, and they will prove invaluable in helping guide Southern’s continuing growth and pursuit of excellence.”
Ware, of Shreveport, represents the Fourth Congressional District. She currently serves as the Curriculum Supervisor for Caddo Parish Schools. She received her Bachelor’s Degree in Mathematics from Southern in 1967, and earned her Master’s in Mathematics from the University of Nebraska in 1974.
Hartman served as Head Women’s Basketball Coach at Southern University from 1992-2000, and was honored as the SWAC Coach of the Year in 1992-93. He lives in Morgan City and represents the Third Congressional District. Coach Hartman earned his Bachelor’s and Master’s Degrees from Southern University.
Doucet represents the Seventh Congressional District. She received her Bachelor’s Degree in Speech Pathology and Audiology as well as her Master’s in Education from Southern University. She presently serves as the Coordinator for Special Education Instructional Programs for the St. Landry Parish School Board.
Tolbert has served as pastor of the Greater Saint Mary Missionary Baptist Church in Lake Charles since 1984. He represents the Seventh Congressional District. Reverend Tolbert graduated from Bishop College in Dallas, Texas.
All appointments are effective October 1, 2007. All terms expire on December 31, 2012, excluding Doucet’s, which expires on December 31, 2010.
The Southern University System, the only historically black university system in America with an enrollment of more than 15,000 students, encompasses five institutions offering two-year, four-year, graduate, professional and doctoral degrees. The Board of Supervisors is vested with the responsibility for the management and the supervision of the institutions of higher education, statewide agricultural programs, and other programs which comprise the Southern University System.
