The Alpha Tau Chapter of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Incorporated has its newest knight in shining armor.
On Wednesday night at 7:13 p.m. in T.T. Allain, six judges crowned senior political science major Reuben Griffin of Dallas with the title of ‘Delta Gent,’ beating the four other gentlemen competing for the coveted position.
Described as “a grown and sexy event” by the sorority’s Co-Chairperson of Fundraising Committee, Nolita Pore, a mass communication major from Chicago, the event, ‘A Knight in Shining Armor,’ was ‘Roman themed’ as well.
“It’s a laid back affair, no ‘jigging,’ no ‘Boosie,'” said Pore.
The pageant was emceed by the 2007-2008 Miss Junior, Aria Williams, a member of Delta Sigma Theta, and the outgoing ‘Delta Gent,’ Nicholas Benjamin, who introduced Danté Godine, Byron Wade, Obina Ikechukwu, Reuben Griffin and Fredrick Antonio Polk to a packed audience.
Each contestant was given the opportunity in the opening scenes to describe themselves and their personalities in one word.
Godine, a criminal justice major from Houston chose ‘optimistic,’ Wade, a mass communications major from Baton Rouge decided on ‘smooth,’ Ikechukwu of Baton Rouge, “erotic,” Polk, an Electrical Engineering major from Baton Rouge, ‘versitile’ and Griffin rounded out the descriptive words with “phocused, with a ‘ph’.”
Benjamin described his reign as the 2005-2006 ‘Delta Gent’ in terms of expectations from the sorority that the position serves.
“The responsibilities of being the ‘Delta Gent’ is being around,” he says. “It was about helping Delta Sigma Theta when they needed it.”
“The Alpha Tau Chapter of Delta Sigma Theta wanted to take time to introduce the campus to programs that will better them, not just parties. We started the week off with a program aimed at economics, and physical and mental health-something the whole campus will enjoy,” said Brittany Bass, a senior political science major from Shreveport, the chapter’s president.
Bass described the type of man who the sorority is looking for as “an intelligent, black male to represent Delta Sigma Theta to the best of his ability, as well as share the same goals as the organization.”
During intermission, the members of the Alpha Tau chapter presented Zakiya Ali as “Miss Delta,” who will reign along side the ‘Delta Gent.’
After a party and talent scene, contestants were allotted time to share with the audience their talents.
All but Griffin, who serenaded Bass with recording artist Tyrese’s “Lately” and “You Are So Beautiful,” recited poems.
After answering various questions ranging from genocide and gentrification among African American communities, Griffin seized the crown, with Ikechukwu and Polk placing second and first runners up, respectively.
“I really enjoyed the pageant,” said Brittani Ware, a senior psychologiy major from Baton Rouge, and member of the sorority.
“It surpassed everything I thought it would, and everything was decorated eloquently. The guys were great; anybody could have won.”
