TALLAHASSEE, FLA – The suspect in last weeks shooting death of a Florida A&M University student has turned himself in to Tallahassee police.
Cortney T. Jones, 30, surrendered about 4 a.m. on Saturday, November 17, 2007 after learning he was the subject of an intense manhunt, said Lt. Dewey Riou of the Tallahassee Police Department. He has been taken to the Leon County Jail. He is being held without bond.
Jones was arrested on charges of homicide while engaged in a felony, robbery with a firearm, use of a firearm in the commission of a felony and violation of probation, Riou said.
He was wanted in connection with the death of Hugh Cunningham Jr., 21, who was found last Thursday in the parking lot of Berkshire Manor Apartments, 2060 Continental Ave., police said. Cunningham had been shot in the stomach.
Cunningham, a health-science senior who was expected to graduate next semester, was taken to Tallahassee Memorial Hospital, where he later died. __ FAMU held a vigil in his memory last Monday at the Eternal Flame in front of Lee Hall.
Jones was considered armed and dangerous. He was sentenced to two years and six months of probation Oct. 31 in Leon Circuit Court on charges of sale of cocaine and marijuana. He spent about 10 months in prison starting in 2001 for possession of an illegal weapon in Polk County.
