BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – The Southwestern Athletic Conference announced its women’s basketball preseason predicted order of finish for the 2007-08 season. In a poll conducted by the conference office, defending tournament champion Prairie View A&M University was selected to finish first in the conference.
Votes were received from the league’s head coaches and sports information directors.
The Lady Panthers made school history last season, earning the program’s first winning season. Prairie View A&M finished with a 19-13 overall record, 14-4 in the SWAC. The Lady Panthers finished the regular season tied for first place with Jackson State. PVAM went on to win their first SWAC tournament title and fell in the first round of the NCAA Tournament to North Carolina.
Jackson State received 151 votes for second place. The Lady Tigers finished the year with the best overall record in the conference at 22-10. JSU finished second in the SWAC Tournament and received a WNIT bid, where they lost in the first round to Tulane. Alabama A&M was chosen third, Arkansas-Pine Bluff fourth and Alcorn State fifth.
Finishing the list at sixth is Southern University (92 pts), Alabama State (91), Grambling State (85), Mississippi Valley State (67) and Texas Southern (32).
SU’s Fredrieka Lewis, a 6’4″ senior center from Beaumont, Texas was named to the SWAC’s 2007-08 Preseason First team.
