Just two months ago Southern was coming off consecutive losing season under coach Pete Richardson and had lost 15 players to off the field issues.
For that Richardson’s Jaguars were all but written off and some even called for his job.
A week from the Bayou Classic Southern and Richardson are close to an extension that would keep him with the school through the 2010 season.
“I think we’ll get it worked out,” Richardson said. “I’m positive we’ll get it worked out.”
Throughout all the turmoil this season Richardson has led his team to a (7-3, 5-3 Southwestern Athletic Conference) record, the best in two seasons with the Jaguars going 4-5 in 2005 and 5-6 in 2006, the only two losing seasons in his 15 year tenure at Southern.
Plus, Southern has done this while playing most of the season with only seven offensive linemen. SU won the Alcorn State game with fellow redshirt quarterback Warren Matthews filling in for an injured Bryant Lee, without starting center Demarcus Stewart and standout receiver Gerard Landry.
Also, of Southern’s three SWAC loses; all are by a combined 13 points.
Richardson’s current three year contract expires Dec. 31.
Southern wraps up its season against Grambling (8-2, 8-0 SWAC) in the Bayou Classic on Nov. 24 at 1 p.m. in New Orleans at the Superdome.
Richardson is 120-52, good for a 69.8 winning percentage in 15 seasons at Southern. Only the legendary A.W. Mumford (176-60-14) has more wins at Southern than Richardson.
“I’m just doing my job and concentrating on Grambling,” Richardson said. “I’ve had discussions with some individuals who are going to try to work extensively to try to get it resolved. Hopefully we get it worked out.”
