The Jaguars of Southern University (4-17, 3-6 Southwestern Athletic Conference) lost their third straight game Saturday night at Davey L. Whitney Complex to Alcorn State, 85-73. The loss is the Jaguars’ fourth in five games.
In the loss, Jaguar forward Deforrest-Riley Smith had 30 points and 11 rebounds to lead Southern.
Alcorn guard Delvin Thompson scored 16 points in the first half, and totaled 22 to lead the Braves. Forward Juan Wyatt had 20 points and 13 rebounds, while Alex Owumi had 13 points.
Patrick Horton also scored 12 in the Alcorn victory.
Alcorn (7-15, 6-3 SWAC) won its fifth consecutive game. But while the first four of those came by a combined nine points, Saturday’s win was by 12.
The Jaguars dug themselves into a hole for the second straight game, with a double digit deficit. And similar to their loss Monday, the Jaguars gave themselves a chance with a legitimate run, only to fall short again.
Again, cold shooting, played a role in the Jaguars demise.
In first half play, the Jaguars were 6 of 26 from field goal range, good for 23 percent shooting. At the same time, the Braves shot 73 percent from field goal range, hitting 19 of 26 shots.
Winless on their three game road trip, the Jaguars won’t return action until they face the Grambling State Tigers on Saturday, Feb. 3 at the F.G. Clark Activity Center. Game time is set for 7:30 p.m.
