Naturally, a person would assume after coming from a “bounce back” victory you would not want to “fall back” into defeat. But the Jaguars proved otherwise.
On Saturday night the Jaguars of Southern women’s basketball team were able to bounce back and defeat the Lady Tigers of Grambling State, but only two days later they fell back into the paws of the Lady Tigers with different color stripes.
On Monday night, at the F.G. Clark Activity Center, the Jaguars were knocked to the wayside, as they were defeated 54-40 by the Lady Tigers of Jackson State.
“You’re going to fall down but it’s depending upon how many times you’re going to get up,” said Southern coach Sandy Pugh. “We just didn’t do a good job executing our offense tonight.”
Southern (3-15, 3-7 SWAC) sluggishly started the game and were down 12-30 by the end of the first half and shot 5-of-23 from the field in comparison to Jackson’s (13-8, 7-3 SWC) 14-of-27.
“I thought that they kind of coasted and stood around looking for someone else to pick up the slack and there was nobody there,” Pugh said. “We just couldn’t hit those shots and we all struggled.”
Senior forward Shante Standford contributed to the bulk of the points for the Lady Tigers. She concluded the game with 18 points, shooting 8-of-12 from the field and 2-3 from the free throw line.
Jackson head coach Denise Taylor credited offensive and defensive transition towards the victory.
“We executed on offense and on the defense,” Taylor said. “We certainly transitioned. And we finished and made the layups.”
The Jaguars were never in the position to obtain the lead. During the second half they shot 11-of-35 from the field and the Lady Tigers had 9-of-22.
On February 10, the Jaguars will travel to Pine Bluff, Ark. to play Arkansas-Pine Bluff at 5:30p.m.
