Founded on the precept of education and promoting and encouraging high scholastic attainment, Sigma Gamma Rho Sorority, Incorporated began on November 12, 1922 on the campus of Butler University in Indianapolis, Ind.
Since its inception, the sorority has grown to over 500 chapters, spreading throughout the United States, Bermuda, the Virgin Islands, Bahamas, Germany and Korea, boosting a membership of more than 85,200.
According to the sorority’s website, the nonprofit service and social organization was incorporated as a national collegiate sorority on December 30, 1929 when a charter was granted to the Alpha Chapter at Butler University.
Of the 500 chapters spread out worldwide, the organization’s Southwest region holds chapters from Arkansas, Louisiana, Oklahoma and Texas.
The Beta Alpha chapter of Sigma Gamma Rho is housed at Southern University as an undergraduate chapter or the sorority.
The Beta Alpha chapter was founded in December 1945. The chapter prides itself on community service, a national goal, and keeps the spirit of service up through its national slogan “Greater Service, Greater Progress.”
The chapter has performed numerous service projects, ranging from Adopt-A-Baby, where the sorority assists teen mothers with baby supplies, Sigma Beautician, where members clean a road or highway for a one mile stretch and the “Mr. Blue and Gold Pageant,” held to acknowledge a “distinguished, well educated, African-American male that holds the same principles as Sigma Gamma Rho,” Crystal Garrett, chapter president, said.
The chapter is also involved with the Louisiana Book Festival, Operation Big Book Bag, Buckle Up America and Wee Savers.
To attain membership into the Beta Alpha chapter of Sigma Gamma Rho Sorority, a willingness to want to help serve the community is needed, a GPA of 2.5 or greater, three letters of recommendation, a letter of intent and financial obligations.
The vice president of the chapter is Jaccarrie Taylor, with Demetria Jackson as the chapter’s secretary/treasurer.
