Sometimes to be successful you have to evaluate your current situation, look back at previous achievements, perhaps exchange new styles for old ones and with a little bit of change in between bring back the “old magic.”
On Monday evening at the F.G. Clark Activity Center, the Jaguars of the Southern University’s women’s basketball team stopped and assessed their present mishaps and looked back upon preceding successes. In the end, they decided to substitute their new white uniforms for the old blue ones and change the starting lineup.
“I’m sick of looking at the white uniforms,” SU coach Sandy Pugh said. “I thought I’d bring out the old magic. We’ve won many games in those.”
The “old magic” coach Pugh spoke of was definitely brought out that evening. Southern (4-11, 4-20 SWAC), the defending Southwestern Athletic Conference champions, beat the current SWAC leader, the Lady Bulldogs of Alabama A&M (15-10, 11-3 SWAC), 57-43.
Jaguars junior Fredrieka Lewis and senior point guard Tiffany Jones were back to the starting lineup. It was Lewis’ initial start since January 4, while Jones started for the second time in the last nine games.
“The biggest thing I saw was team unity and Tiffany taking a leadership role at the point,” Pugh said. “I laid in bed all night, trying to figure out should I pull the freshman Brittany Groves and put Tiffany in. My common sense said I have to change the rhythm of what we’re doing.”
“We’re going in a hole every game with the young squad, and we’re having to fight our way out of that,” she said. “That was putting a little too much pressure on us offensively.”
Freshman Aerica Hicks noted a career high with 18 points. Hicks concluded with four rebounds two steals and eight assists.
“I was happy to see her hit some shots. I was happy to see her teammates have confidence in her to look for her,” Pugh said. “She took a whole lot of pressure off Fredrieka by making those shots. Fredrieka didn’t have to score 30 for us to win.”
Huggins put up 13 points and grabbed eight rebounds for her second straight double digit game.
The Lady Bulldogs, Krystal Malone had 15 points and eight rebounds.
On Saturday, Feb. 24 the Jaguars will play the Lady Braves of Alcorn State University. The game time is set for 2:00 pm in the F.G. Clark Activity Center. This will be the final home game for the Jaguars this season.
