Is Southern University prepared for a fire emergency?
According to officials in the Office of Life and Fire Safety, the answer to that question is yes.
“The level of emergency my office handles ranges from students or personnel that may be trapped in elevators to campus blackouts and everything in between,” said Graylin Quinn, director of the Fire Safety at Southern.
Quinn said his department is responsible for fire and life safety and is staffed with four additional team members that are trained to respond in case of an emergency.
The department is funded by the state of Louisiana and those funds are only, “geared toward life and fire safety,” Quinn said.
“My office conducts routine fire drills and building inspections throughout the semester in which we take 15 to 30 minutes to field questions from those that have partaken in the drill,” Quinn said. “My office is in accordance with all fire safety code and is capable of handling the extinguishing of smaller fire emergencies.”
According to Quinn, 80 percent of the fire alerts his office receives come from someone triggering the alarm falsely or causing, what is called, a nuisance alarm.
Quinn said students should “Call 771-2770 to report any emergencies so that the campus can respond to the emergency while the fire department is in route.”
Quinn said his department will begin to offer classes to those individuals that are responsible for safety on each floor of every building on campus.
The Office of Life and Fire safety prides it self on being, “proactive rather than reactive.”
