In efforts to enhance our Student Government through open communication, this correspondence is the first in a weekly series of letters from the Student Government Association President, Carey Ash, entitled “From the President’s Desk”:
My fellow Jaguars,
Two weeks ago, the Student Body faced a very tough decision in electing its next President. For your selecting me, I would like to thank everyone who had the courage to vote and believed in change. Second, to the administration, faculty, and staff: I look forward to working with all of you and making the necessary adjustments in order to better our Jaguar Nation. In keeping with my campaign slogan, now, more than ever, I am fully committed to moving our Institution in the right direction. To my fellow newly elected officials: I publicly issue to you the challenge of cooperation and encourage you to be leaders of integrity as the student body deserves to be lead not by words, but by actions. Furthermore, let us remember that leadership is to be treated as a service, and simply holding a title is never good enough.
My fellow students, I remind and encourage you to hold me accountable to staying fully committed to my platform. As I promised in the debate, I have officially waived my right to the scholarship monies dedicated to the SGA President for the betterment of the Student Body. With the money I have given up, I will enact the Textbook Assistance Program to help those students who are not able to afford their textbooks. Following this, the negotiation of student discounts at the thriving community businesses will begin, and lastly, but certainly not least, I will initiate a dialogue with the University administration to implement “Dead Days” during finals week so that we can perform to the utmost of our scholastic ability. These three initiatives round out the planks of my platform, and this day I give you my word to accomplish these goals to the best of my ability. Rest assured, my word will be kept.
Jaguars, let us continue to endeavor in Jaguar Pride through sincerity, unity, and dedication. I look forward to leading you and good luck on your finals!
With sincere regard,
Carey L. H. Ash,
