Southern University students said they are satisfied with the new Information Technology Center in John B. Cade Library, according to survey results released last week by the Dean of Libraries Emma Perry.
“Outstanding, wonderful is what they tell me,” Perry said. “It’s been a smashing success and tells us that we made a great investment.”
The Title III funded ITC, which has 30 plus Dell computers, plasma televisions and colorful lounge furniture, opened in the beginning of March. It was built in response to student outcry for more computers in the library.
Since opening its doors to the student body, it has become a very popular spot on campus, according to a survey conducted between March 29 and April 6.
Out of the 363 surveyed all found the general layout, furniture and the staff of the ITC satisfactory.
362 out of 363 felt that it was good investment and they would recommend the center to fellow SU students.
“These results make me feel good about the ITC,” Perry said. “It makes me proud as the Dean of Library as how the students feel.”
According to Perry, besides the group study room, the most popular feature of the area is the atmosphere, which is the combination of soft music, student artwork and lounge music.
Freshmen political science major from Houma Chernika McCoy said because of the ITC, she now has a reason to come to the library more.
“I think it’s good. I like the fact that I have more access to computers and its more comfortable,” McCoy said.
One of the few complaints about the ITC is the understaffing which forces the computer lounge area to close at 5 p.m. The ITC isn’t open on weekends either, something Perry said would be fixed in the near future.
Students like Akilah Faoeming, a sophomore nursing major from Baton Rouge, said she still finds it more convenient.
“Its one of the more nicer places on this campus and hopefully will be a huge asset to our academic careers,” Faoeming said.
Perry said due to the success of the ITC she hopefully the entire library will have an overall look and feel of the ITC in the near future.
