In Ephesians 4:3 of the Holy Bible it states, “Endeavoring to keep the unity of the spirit in the bond of peace,” a motto which members of the Elogeme Adolphi Christian Sorority live by.
It is also what guides the ladies of the organization to keep in line with the word of God.
In 1975, late Evangelist Mattie P. Dawson was given a vision by God to have a Christian sisterhood on college campuses nationwide.
In 1987, on the campus of Bradley University, the vision was fulfilled with the assistance of the first National Advisor, Denice Haynes and National Officer, Evangelist Judy Hendricks in Peoria, Illinois.
The organization was to be a sisterhood based on the principles of Christ with an ultimate goal to promote unity, promote social discipline and prepare young women to operate effectively in the body of Christ, states the sorority’s website.
Elgogeme, which means “Blessed of the Lord” and Adolphi, which translates as sisterhood, was brought to Southern University in the form of the Hiddekel chapter in 1992. The organization is not to be confused with a “social” organization, nor does it have an intake or pledging process.
“I wanted something to strengthen my relationship with God,” said Clair Hollins, chapter president on why she chose the sorority. “And that’s what I found in this organization.”
The community service organization seeks ladies with a minimum of 2.5 grade point average and currently has nine members on the Southern campus.
“We’ll have our informational on Thursday, April 26,” Hollins said. “But people who are interested should come out Wednesday in the union. We’ll have a table set up.”
The organization has no set religious preferences in terms of race or denomination but asks that applicants be saved according to the Holy Scriptures.
