Senior Kylon Wishom had a good day.
He stole the show on Saturday, April 14 during the 48th annual Pelican Relays when he opened the meet by singing the national anthem and then racing pass his competition on the track to secure both individual and team wins.
The Pelican Relays took place in A.W. Mumford Stadium on the Roscoe Moore Track.
“I think it was a successful meet,” said Southern track coach Johnny Thomas. “It was very competitive, down to the wire in every event.”
The meet took place on a day that exhibited almost every type of weather imaginable. It all started with a heavy rain that backed off to a hot, sunny spring day that ended chilly as the sun set.
“We managed to get through the weather, that was the best part,” Thomas said. “Running into the wind is pretty tough.”
The gusty winds were a constant, and made running south to north difficult for his team, Thomas said.
But strong winds didn’t hinder Wishom’s drive to win. Starting back in lane three, Wishom never got clear of the wind until the stretch to the finish and with the wind at his back he finally blew past the field.
“I felt real confident at my own meet,” Wishom said. “I wasn’t satisfied with my time because of the wind. It’s hard. You just have to push through.”
“This was a good tune-up for us,” he said. “The best thing about it was we had no injuries. We’re prepared to go into the SWAC meet and be competitive.”
The Southern men also had a strong day in the relays, as expected, with sprinters like A.J. Turner and Wishom.
“I’m ready for it,” Wishom said. “It’s my senior year. I’m trying to go out with a bang.”
The question for the Jaguars will be if they’ll be able to get enough from the field and the distance events to make a run at the men’s title.
Southern will now go on to Troy University in Troy, Ala. to compete in the Southwestern Athletic Conference Outdoor Track and Field Championships on April 20 through the 22.
