Playing at home usually gives a team the advantage and adds extra excitement towards winning.
This weekend the Lady Jaguars of the Southern will have home-field advantage as Southern hosts the 2007 Southwestern Athletic Conference Softball Tournament at Lady Jaguar Softball Field.
The last time Southern hosted the SWAC Conference Softball Tournament was in 2003. That year Southern played the Lady Panthers of Prairie View A&M and won a championship title 3-0.
The 2007 tournament began Wednesday, April 25, and will run until the championship game on April 29 at 11 am.
The top three teams from both the Western and Eastern Division will face each other on the Lady Jaguar softball field.
Currently the Lady Jaguars captured a 12-6 conference record and stand in first place for the Western Division. Texas Southern gained the number two seed whereas Arkansas-Pine Bluff obtained the number three seed.
Last year, the Lady Devilettes of Mississippi Valley State took home the championship crown when they defeated the Lady Braves of Alcorn State, 2-1.
This year, the Lady Devilettes lead the Eastern Division as the number one seed with a 14-4 conference record. Going into the tournament, Jackson State sits in the second seed and Alabama A&M in the third seed.
The double-elimination event goes on until Sunday on the Southern campus.
Currently on offense, the Lady Jaguars are led by junior second baseman, Courtney Chappell (.365 average with eight doubles, two triples and 16 runs batted in) and third-baseman freshman, Brittany Hymes (.349 average).
Freshman pitcher, Megan Hodge has a 13-6 record with a 2.62 ERA and 126 strikeouts.
