Monday, the Southern Lady Jaguars softball team was out roared by the Lady Lions of Southeastern University. In a doubleheader, the Lady Jaguars fell in both games. They were defeated 4-10 in the first game and 2-3 in the second.
Southern currently has a 10-15 record and Southeastern 23-22 for the year overall. The defeats push Southern back at a 0-3 loss against the Lady Lions this season.
During the first game, the Lady Jaguars trailed in first inning.
A hit by Lady Lion and junior second baseman Arica Rodriguez allowed Southeastern to score two runs and obtain a 2-0 lead. Lady Jaguar leftfielder Tiffany Darville, could not handle the high ball hit from senior Lady Lion first baseman Rebecca De la Garza, which enabled the bases to open up and give the Lady Lions the 5-0 lead.
Southern eventually singled off Lady Lion junior pitcher Rachel Ray and gained three runs with a score of 5-3 towards the end of the first.
At the second the Lady Jaguars started to fall short, the Lady Lions racked up the points.
Senior Lady Lion Michelle Lemons singled and The Lady Lions added to their lead in the top of the second. On two walks by sophomore outfielder MCubbins, she was able to help senior shortstop Michelle Lemons as she singled and ran to second making it possible for senior Lady Lion catcher Carolann Wenisch to follow with a double, allowing both runners to score and give Southeastern two more points, leaving the Jaguars trailing 3-7.
In the fifth, the Lady Jaguars were down by 7, trailing 3-10 yet the large deficit did not stop freshman outfielder Lakeida Jackson’s RBI single, which helped sophomore shortstop Denean Woods’ single to score the Lady Jaguars an extra point at 4-10.
In game two, the Lady Jaguars were held at 0-3 lead by the Lady Lions.
It wasn’t until the bottom of the sixth that Darville singled to score two runs for the Lady Jaguars. However, her single was not good enough to bring Southern out with a win as they lost 3-2.
