In the wake of the Virginia Tech massacre, which claimed the lives of 33 students, the Southern University Police Department is raising its cognizance of any weapon possession by students on campus.
“There are too many guns at Southern,” said Mike Morris, SU chief of police. “The last thing I want to see is a gunfight on this campus.”
“Even before Virginia Tech I wanted to raise awareness and attack the problems about students having guns on campus,” Morris said.
Morris said since he has been hired as the Chief of Police he has confiscated 10 to 15 guns on campus.
“It is against the university rules and it is not safe,” Morris said.
Morris said the Virginia Tech mass slaughter challenged him to review and critique the emergency response plans of the campus in the case of any situation that may occur.
“We are trying to make our SUPD emergency response policy match Baton Rouge Police department,” he said. “So in the event if any student, or individual, on the campus are caught with the possession of a gun, they will be arrested and the gun will be confiscated.”
According to the university’s residential housing department rental terms it states, “Alcoholic beverages, drug paraphernalia, weapons and firearms of any kind are prohibited on the campus including but not limited to the residence hall rooms, and/or on the person of any individual on the campus.”
“These guns are not to be on campus or in possession of a individual at anytime,” Morris said. “It is a university violation and policy violation, possession of any weapons will not be tolerated.”
