Sometimes history repeats itself sooner than expected, and once again you find yourself in a win-lose situation.
For the Lady Jaguars of the Southern University softball team, last year was revisited as they split a doubleheader for the second in two consecutive years against the Lady Braves of Alcorn State last Saturday at Lady Jaguar Field.
In the first game, Plaquemine native, freshman and third- baseman/pitcher for the Lady Jaguars, Brittany Hymes singled and stole to second base in the second inning.
Hymes’ single and steal allowed Lady Jaguar, Jasmine Williams, a freshman shortstop from Carthage, Tx. to get an RBI single, which ultimately gave Southern (8-11, 2-1 SWAC) the 2-1 advantage over Alcorn (10-24) by the end of the seventh ending.
However, the Lady Jaguars earlier game winning high against the Lady Bulldogs did not last long enough to give them another win. In the second game, Alcorn took the lead and ultimately dominated 7-1.
This doubleheader split is not new to the match up between both teams. Just last year these two teams faced each other once before on the Lady Jaguar Field.
During that season the Lady Jaguars fell short to the Lady Braves in the first game 2-3. But in the second game they defeated them 5-4. However, this season Southern was able to stop Alcorn from winning the first game, nonetheless, concluded with another loss.
Presently, Southern is ranked second behind Texas Southern in the Southwestern Athletic Conference Western Division.
Individuals leading the Lady Jaguars in the SWAC Conference are Hymes, who currently ranks fifth with a .360 batting average.
In addition is freshman pitcher Megan Hodge, from Atlanta. Hodge is in second place with 67 strikeouts, a pitching era of 2.60 and 7-2 record.
Overall, Southern is ranked fourth in the SWAC conference in both batting and pitching. The Lady Jaguars have an overall batting average of .247 and pitching era of 3.74.
On Wednesday, April 4, the Lady Jaguars will travel to Lake Charles to face the Cowgirls of McNeese State University at 6:00 p.m.
