Troy, Ala.- It’s hard enough for seniors to compete in a final championship knowing it is their last year. But it’s even harder to say goodbye when you give your all, and your team still leaves empty handed.
The seniors of the Southern University track and field team gave their all at the Outdoor Track and Field Southwestern Athletic Conference Championships at Troy University this past weekend. But their all was not enough to bring the Jaguars back home with a title.
Seniors Monica Robinson and Kaisha Weeks tried to lead the Southern women to a SWAC conference victory, but only obtained individual successes of their own.
For the third year in a row Robinson was named the outstanding field performer. In her usual style, she competed in eight events coming out with three firsts in the pole vault and 100 hurdles on Friday, and the 400 relay on Sunday.
Weeks came in second place behind Robinson in Friday’s 100 hurdles and won first in the javelin on Saturday. She also placed first as she joined Robinson in the 400 relay team on Sunday.
But Robinson and Weeks weren’t the only two that helped contribute to the Southern women, Lady Jaguar senior sprinter Pamela Cockerham joined in with the duo in 400 relay victory, also winning second in the 100 mm dash.
For the men, both seniors and sprinters A.J. Turner and Kylon Wishom led the way.
Turner captured first place in the 400m, with Wishom right behind him in second.
Turner and Wishom both established qualifying regional times during the weekend and both were on the winning 1600 relay team.
Turner and Wishom weren’t the only two Jaguars to place for the men. Young freshman Jaguar, Jason House came in second in the high jump at 6 feet, 11 inches on Sunday.
In spite of individual victories, the team was not able to come out on top this season.
The Lady Jaguars ended the SWAC Outdoor Track and Field Championships in second with 156.3 points, and Alabama State took home the championship title totaling 190 points.
The Jaguar men ended the championships at a low 109.5 points sitting at fourth place, with Grambling on top in first and concluding with 181 points.
