Southern University will finally be “on the air.”
The university system will debut a radio show on Saturday, March 3 on AM 1300 WIBR. The broadcast will originate from the studios of Citadel Broadcasting every Saturday morning beginning at 8 a.m.
According to officials, the show will educate and update listeners on the Southern University System’s news and developments.
“Inside the Southern University System” will be designed to link students, alumni and the community to the University System by focusing on current and upcoming activities, milestones and achievements as well as other topics of interest.
“One of the ways this show stands apart from other university radio shows is that we will focus on an array of topics,” said Robyn Merrick, director of SU public affairs and co-host for the radio talk show. “Most importantly, we will focus on the successes of our students.”
Merrick said the show will feature system and community news and information, followed by a variety of segments, which will allow each Southern University campus the opportunity to convey information.
There will also be a weekly athletics segment to promote upcoming athletic events and to provide general information to Jaguar Nation fans.
“This radio show provides consistent information through live weekly broadcast, via airwaves and the web, reaching a world audience with exciting news and highlights to promote and enhance the Southern University System,” said co-host Katara Williams.
Since Italian inventor Guglielmo Marconi proved the feasibility of radio communication in 1812, programming technology has grown significantly. Broadcasts and recorded sound can now be digitalized and transmitted over the Internet.
As a result of this innovation, “Inside the Southern University System” will be available on the system’s website at www.sus.edu immediately following the original program.
“I am very pleased with the launch of the system’s new radio show,” said Ralph Slaughter, president of the Southern University system. “Communication strategies are essential for keeping faculty, staff, alumni and students engaged in the current initiatives of the University.”
“Mediums such as the radio show, the upcoming television show and the Southern University System Magazine are just a few ways that we plan to keep you connected and informed,” he said.
