On Sunday, March 4, the Felton G. Clark Activity Center was transformed into a palace of couture when high fashion met time-honored tradition.
The auditorium was filled with more than 500 people who came out to support the 49th annual Ebony Fashion Fair, which was sponsored by the Gamma Eta Omega Chapter of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc.
“We are the oldest and only sponsors of Ebony Fashion Fair and we commit to this service with great honor,” said Beverly Wade, president of the AKA’s.
Sunday’s show featured 13 models, two males and 11 females, who pranced the runway showcasing evening wear, urban apparel and swim wear from national and international locations around the world such as London, New York and Brazil.
” I have been attending Ebony’s Fashion Fair shows for 19 years” said Trachelle Cornish, a Southeastern Louisiana University student and a member of Alpha Kappa Alpha Lambda Omicron. “Its gets bigger and better every year and I cant wait till next year.”
Not only did women like Cornish enjoy the show, even some of the gentlemen in attendance said the fashion show was a sight to see.
“I thought I was going to be the only guy here,” said Urgent Dozier, a sophomore criminal justice major from Baton Rouge. “But it turns out that other males were here doing the same thing I was doing…looking at the ladies.”
The models walked the runway to such tunes as “Me and You” by Cassie, “It’s Going Down” by Young Joc and the remix of the “Pink Panther Theme.”
“Our goal is to have every person in the audience to have a stunning expression when the show starts and ends,” said Steve Williams, business manager for Ebony Fashion Fair. “And we achieve our goal every show.”
Not only did the attendees enjoy the fashion extravaganza, but models of the show expressed their enjoyment in participating in the annual showcase as well.
“We do six shows a week, I love doing what I do,” said Ontwanet Moran, a 25-year-old Ebony Model from Los Angeles, Calif. “Not only that but I do not have to pay for anything.”
Before concluding, selected audience members received prizes and gift certificates in commemoration of the event.
Williams said the 50th annual of Ebony Fashion Fair will have a special guest appearance of whom could not be revealed along with former Ebony models to bring in the new fashion trends.
“The 50th annual of Ebony Fashion Fair will be the 100th year of the Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority,” Wade said. “You never know what surprises we have in store.”
