The Southern University School of Architecture is now a fully accredited program after undergoing its mandatory accreditation review on Sept. 16 through 20 by the National Architectural Accrediting Board.
The school’s review was conducted by a team of six professionals, including two observers, selected by the school to carry out an exhaustive examination of the academic program offering, student work, faculty performance and physical facilities.
The six professionals reviewed samples of student’s work, course material that included syllabuses, assignments, examinations, reports and research papers.
According to Interim Dean Lonnie Wilkinson, who has presided as interim since January of 2005, each program goes through a process of reaffirming accreditation and the team found compliance in 30 of the 34 student performance criteria.
“This program has a bright future ahead of it,” Wilkinson said. “Without the positive participation of students, faculty and staff, this process would not have been successful as it was.”
“Much of the success of this recent accreditation reaffirmation process is due to the support and guidance of the Chancellor’s Office and the office of Academic Affairs,” he said.
Because of its mission, Wilkinson said the program singularly occupies a unique place and performs a very special role in the state of Louisiana. Young people from Louisiana, other sates and foreign countries, with the desire to become architects, are welcomed to the Southern University School of Architecture.
