Southern University students looking for a little spiritual enlightenment have a new option.
Back in the 1980s, campuses such as Grambling State and Louisiana State Universities were the first to charter Love Alive, an inspirational outlet for students.
After 25 years, Love Alive has made it to The Bluff.
The first meeting was held in Frank Hayden Hall on Jan. 24.
Campus chapter president Adrienne Johnson, said attendees started the meeting with high expectations.=
“Our goal is to make it more comfortable for students to become Christians and to give encouragement to them for their everyday lives,” Johnson, a freshman accounting major from Shreveport, said. “We don’t want to force Christianity down anyone’s throat, but we want to slowly lead them on the path to God”.
Michael Lee, a minister at LSU, advised the meeting and used the passage of Nehemiah 8:10 from the Bible as one of his references.
“Then he said unto them, Go your way, eat the fat, and drink the sweet, and send portions unto them for whom nothing is prepared: for this day is holy unto our LORD: neither be ye sorry; for the joy of the LORD is your strength.”
What is starting as a bible study ministry for Southern’s campus, Johnson is hoping to turn Love Alive into a social club where they will have meetings, forums, debates, different activities and at the end of the semester, a banquet for club members.
“We hope to have more Christians on campus and to bring Christ into people’s lives,” Johnson said. “There aren’t any members of the club yet, so this means people will have to come. Therefore it is up to us at Southern to show up and get the words of encouragement.”
