In 2000, Martin Lawrence’s film “Big Momma’s House” grossed over $200 million worldwide and became a comedic classic that tickled funny bones while earning nominations at the NAACP Image Awards and the Blockbuster Awards.
The storyline of the first movie was simple. Lawrence (Martin and Life) played FBI agent Malcolm Turner whose assignment was to arrest brutal bank robber and prison escapee Lester Vesco (Terrence Howard of Hustle and Flow). When Malcolm realizes that Lester is trying to visit former girlfriend Sherry Pierce played by Nia Long (Friday and Are We There Yet?), he goes undercover as Sherry’s aunt Hattie Mae “Big Momma” Pierce. Despite Malcolm’s initial goal to nab the bad guy, he falls in love with Sherry and realizes that life is more than just work.
In the sequel, Malcolm returns as Big Momma, but this time as a nanny/housekeeper for the Fuller family. His assignment is to investigate Leah Fuller (Emily Proctor of CSI: Miami), who is under surveillance for murder. When Big Momma begins to develop a relationship with the Fuller family, the lines between business and personal become blurred.
Regardless of Lawrence’s box office flops in recent years —Rebound, National Security, Black Knight and What’s the Worst That Could Happen- Big Momma’s House 2 could be the movie needed to give Lawrence a much needed push in his acting career. Mixing his comedic skills, with action and costumes, Big Momma’s House 2, which hits theaters on the 27th of this month, is the perfect laugh-out loud movie to end the week.
