Coming off an emotional 72-68 win over his old squad Alabama State, Jaguars head coach Rob Spivery has the task of getting Southern ready for Alcorn State.
The Jaguars (8-10 overall, 7-1 Southwestern Athletic Conference) will face the Braves (4-13 overall, 4-4 SWAC) Saturday at 7:30 p.m. in the F.G. Clark Activity Center.
“That was an exciting, fun game and a good win for this basketball team,” Spivery said. “It should add to our confidence level.”
Southern will try to hold on to SWAC’s top spot, and will have to avoid the mistakes they made that led to their overtime win over the Hornets. Noted by the conference for their performances were guards senior Chris Alexander and junior DeForrest Riley Smith.
Alexander had 26 points against Alabama State and in the last two games averaged 17.5 ppg and 3.0 rebounds pg, with 4 assists, 4 steals and 1 blocked shot. Riley-Smith averaged 16.5 ppg, 6.5 rebounds pg and 1.5 assists pg last week.
“We just look at it as just another game,” Alexander said. “We have to start playing the type of basketball we know to do: that’s defense and rebounds, and we win games.”
