Flowers new NROTC helmsman

U.S. Navy Capt. Kent Flowers assumed the duties as Southern University’s new Naval Reserve Officer Training Corps commanding officer, replacing Capt. Jeffrey Sapp in November 2005.
Having a background in top naval positions such as commander of the USS Anchorage (LSD 36) and executive officer aboard the USS Estocin (FFG 15), Flowers also had extensive experience training senior leaders of naval ships. With his new career move, Flowers looks forward to at least three years of working with training and challenging young midshipmen with what he calls the “Gold Medal” standard.
” – Earning the gold medal is to leave Southern with their college degree and their military commission -,” Flowers said. “I’m requiring them to not only be proficient in their major but gaining military, professional knowledge that will directly impact how they will lead the sailors and marines of the future.”
The commanding officer’s duties include monitoring each NROTC student’s course of study in order to meet University requirements for graduation as well as commissioning.
Flowers will be responsible for establishing high standards for faculty and student achievement. He will also be in charge of ensuring Southern’s NROTC meets the requirements of the Navy by making necessary changes in courses.
One of his goals is to expose Southern students to the NROTC’s scholarships and unique opportunities.
“(Flowers) has made a great immediate impact on the students and faculty showing great concern for our careers,” said NROTC Lt. Leonard Mitchell.
Jamal Taylor, a freshman political science major from Lafayette, looks forward to Flowers continuing the high standards of Southern’s NROTC.
“We are going to miss our old Captain Sapp but our new commanding officer seems as if he has the experience and drive to lead us into further excellence,” Taylor said.
Sapp changed commands after four years at NROTC and received orders to report to Naval Surface Warfare Center in Arlington, Va.
