Southern’s women’s flag football team entered the 2005 national flag football championship as defending champions, but finished as national runner ups. They defeated Angelo State (Texas) 7-0, Campbell University (N.C.) 13-6, and Tennessee-Martin 39-0 before going into the semi-finals.
Facing Howard University on their way to retain their title, Southern advanced to the championship game with a 20-0 win. It was a game of revenge as Southern faced Sam Houston once again, the team they defeated in last year’s title game. But this year, Sam Houston was victorious, defeating the women’s team 28-13.
The men’s flag football team placed third, a repeat from last year. The Southern Soldiers overpowered Murray State (KY) 53-0 before moving on to defeat Central Florida 27-21, Bowling Green University 30-21 and Angelo State 27-21 in the quarterfinals.
Last year Pensacola Junior College eliminated Southern in the semifinal, and though this year Southern fought back to tie the score at 32-32, Pensacola Junior was able to give Southern another lost with a 47-40 win. But Southern’s players did not leave without a few accolades. Brandon McCray and Mark Henderson were selected to the offensive all-American team and Bryan Miller got first-team defense honors.
