The Jaguars women’s basketball team has been known to come back and take over.
That was not the case against Alabama State.
Southern (10-7 overall, 7-1 Southwestern Athletic Conference) lost their first home and conference game of the season on Jan. 23, in a 57-51 loss to the Lady Hornets. It could have been the change in game time or the fact they could not sink the ball as they were out scored 43-23 in the second half.
The Jaguars played second fiddle after the men’s team, due to television scheduling.
“We’re just going to do what we do best and that’s getting up and defending,” said head coach Sandy Pugh. “We are our worst enemy and once we play on the level that we are capable of playing we should be fine.”
The Jags won’t dwell in the past, but will prepare to face rival Alcorn State. Senior guard and conference preseason player of the year Rolanda Monroe and company will face the current SWAC champions on Saturday at 5:30 p.m. in the F.G. Clark Activity Center. The last time the two teams met was during the title game of the SWAC championship game, where the Jags lost 56-47 to Alcorn State (6-10 overall, 4-4 SWAC).
“Alcorn is coming off a two-game winning streak, so once we focus on the game and finish in the paint, we’ll be back to our streak,” Pugh said.
