According to Southern Student Government Association President Justin McCorkle, seven students were relocated to Samuell V. Totty and Camille S. Shade Hall after sustaining damage in a Jan. 25 flood in Mary McLeod Bethune.
McCorkle got rental vehicles and volunteers to assist the students’ move after they were given the option to relocate by Marilyn Hill, residential housing director.
“Saturday, we rented a U-Haul for anyone who wanted to move from the dorm. About eight to 10 men volunteered to help the young ladies move to the back of campus.” McCorkle, who created a commission to monitor student’s complaints regarding residential housing. “The commission will consist of the head resident assistant and the dorm president of each residential hall.”
Hill said all repairs have been made and students affected can pick up their clothing and books.
“The clothing items are back from the cleaners and students should pick them up. As for their books, they should be available for them in the bookstore.”
Alana Leach, sophomore business management major from New Orleans is not as optimistic as Hill.
“We haven’t received any of our clothing, books or other personal items the school promised they would fixed for us. In fact, they (residential housing) haven’t sent out excuses to our teachers letting them know about our housing situation.”
Although Leach was given the opportunity to move to a new dorm room, she chose to stay in Bethune.
“I couldn’t stay in Shade or Totty because the distance is a problem for me. I wanted to move into Washington Hall,” Leach said. “But I was told since the RA’s needed private rooms they could only allow four girls to move in.”
Despite McCorkle’s and other residents’ suggestions to close Bethune permanently, Hill said the administration has not made an official decision on its fate.
“Most of the students decided to stay in Bethune,” Hill said.
McCorkle said he also spoke with sophomore mass communication major Chassity Milner, the resident who was arrested during a protest afterwards. He said he just wanted to be fair in accessing her situation.
“There are two sides to every story and I wanted to get her take on what happened,” McCorkle said. She told me things with the students and the police got out of hand.”
Hill said they had no updated status on Milner at the present time.
