NEW ORLEANS – The Southern University women’s soccer team earned their first two victories of the season. They defeated the Lady Braves of Alcorn State University 2-1 on Friday. Then on Sunday they went into New Orleans and defeated the Loyola University 1-0 for their first shut-out of the year.
“The ladies performed very well this week-end,” said head soccer coach John Knighten. “We could have scored more but we missed a lot of shots.”
SOUTHERN 1 – LOYOLA 0
On Sunday, freshman Amanda Soto-Ortiz’s goal was the only score of the match as the Lady Jags defeated Loyola 1-0 at the Westfield Facility on the campus of Tulane University. Soto-Ortiz’s goal came in the 13th minute of the match. The Hopemills, North Carolina native collected freshman Loren Moulton’s shot that ricocheted off of Loyola keeper Jordann Webster for the game winning goal. Southern out-shot Loyola 21-1 in the match.
SOUTHERN 2 – ALCORN 1
Southern (2-5) traveled to Vicksburg, Miss., and defeated Alcorn for their first victory of the season. Sophomore midfielder and 2005 All-Louisiana honorable mention honoree, Almarie Soto-Ortiz, scored both goals versus the Lady Braves. Goalies Ashley Stevenson had two saves while freshman Dena Austring recorded five.
NORTHWESTERN 8 – SOUTHERN 0
Southern (0-5) was never in the game as the Lady Demons took control of the game and scored at the 5:55 mark to take the lead and never look back.
Northwestern scored three more goals in the first half and four in the second to take an 8-0 win over Southern in A.W. Munford stadium.

SU will take their first winning streak of the season to Shreveport on Friday, September 22nd to play the Lady Pilots of LSU-Shreveport. Game time is schedule for 4 p.m
