LORMAN, Miss. (AP) – About 1,000 people attended the funeral for Alcorn State University President Clinton Bristow Jr., who died while jogging on campus.
“I shared my daddy with you all, and in return I insist you all live out his legacy,” Maya Bristow, his daughter told the overflow crowd at the memorial service held on campus.
Bristow, 57, died of heart failure after collapsing at the university track in Lorman, Miss., Saturday evening on August 19, 2006, just days before classes started.
A student found Bristow on the track around 9 p.m. Saturday. He was known to jog each night. The student couldn’t get a response from Bristow and called campus police, Claiborne County Coroner J.W. Mallett said.
Bristow was named Alcorn State president on Aug. 24, 1995. Alcorn is one of three historically black public universities in Mississippi, has about 3,500 students.
“He was a great role model for African-American men,” said Alcorn student government President Larry Duncan, 22, a senior. He said Dr. Bristow’s mantra was “ASU equals CEO” and referred to the university as the “Academic Resort.”
He is survived by his “life partner,” Lezli Baskerville; daughter, Maya Bristow; sister, Annie Peoples and her children Shameece and James; brother, David Bristow, god sister Mary E. Young, and a host of relatives spread from New Jersey to Florida to Texas.
The state College Board named Malvin Williams as interim president. The 64-year old is a longtime administrator who retired from Alcorn State last year.
