The key ingredients that provided the winning chemistry for the Southern University Lady Jaguars volleyball team to secure their first win of the season was missing Tuesday, Sept. 19 when the ladies faced off against the ladies of Centenary College.
The Lady Jags were dominated 3-0 by Centenary in their face off in Seymour Gymnasium on Tuesday. Centenary concluded the season sweep over the Lady Jaguars by scores of 30-15, 30-24, 30-22 after winning at home against Southern three weeks ago.
“We played defense first but were unable to find our offensive niche,” said Coach Nathaniel Denu. “We just didn’t play well tonight.”
The Breaux Bridge, La native Ena Payne led Southern (4-7, 1-0 SWAC). She finished the game with nine kills and six digs.
“I am disappointed,” said Payne. “We could have played a lot better than we did.”
Sophomore setter Lakenya Simpson concluded with 26 assists and nine digs.
The Ladies (6-11) dominated from the start of the match as the Maroon and White shot off 20 kills. Danielle Bochat and Rebacca Lunceford who both finished the game with 15 kills led the Ladies.
“I am really pleased with the way we performed tonight,” said Ladies Head Coach Jenny Hazelwood. “This will give us a lot of confidence going into conference play this weekend.
The Lady Jaguars will face the Lady Tigers of Jackson State University, Thursday, Sept. 21. Game time is set for 6:00 p.m.
