A new parking and traffic notice was announced Thursday, Sept. 7 during a meeting with the Southern University Police Department.
With the football team prepared to play its’ first home game Saturday, September 9 in A.W. Mumford Stadium, traffic directors are expecting large crowds and a heavy volume of traffic, which officials with the police department say they are prepared to direct on and off the campus.
“This is the first year that tailgating spots have been sold on E. C. Harrison Drive, known as ‘the strip’,” said Charlene Anderson, captain of the SU police department. “This first game will be a trial and error for the rest of the home games this season.
“There will be approximately 100 officers in the stadium for security purposes,” Anderson said. “In addition to the attorney general, Baton Rouge City Sheriffs and constables to assist with the traffic.”
Anderson said the police department will utilize Swan Street, Isabella Herson and Jesse Stone Street located near the Southern Laboratory School to prevent any traffic overflow.
Harding Boulevard and the back gate will also be utilized to escort incoming and outgoing traffic as well.
Students with school IDs and parking permits will be directed to park near the Student Union and Bethune Hall.
All students must have the new SU One Card to enter the game on Saturday. ID cards can be taken in J.B. Moore Hall in room 312 Monday through Fridays from 9 a.m. to noon and 1 p.m. to 4 p.m.
