Baton Rouge, LA – The Southern University Lady Jaguars soccer team ended their season on a high note with its first tie of the season coming against the Jackson State University Lady Tigers 3-3.
“We played very well even though there were extreme conditions,” Southern coach John Knighten said. “There was standing water on the field and the wind was picking up as it got later so it made play difficult for both teams.”
Southern (6-11-1, 2-2 Southwestern Athletic Conference) was led by freshman Loren Moulton who scored her first and second goal of the season in the first half with assists from sophomores Charmaine Jones and Jamika Pugh. Moulton was also assisted by junior Cyra Charles on her second goal. Preseason All-SWAC Kendall Smith scored her team leading seventh goal with assistance from freshmen Tiffany Cantu and Loren Moulton.
“Our record does not show how we have improved over the season,” Knighten said. “We lost three games against SWAC teams by one goal and one by two, so we know we can play with anybody in the SWAC we just need to compete all 90:00 minutes.”
The top three teams have from both divisions advance to the SWAC post season soccer tournament. For the third consecutive season, SU finished in third place in the Western Division. They will face the second seeded team from the Eastern Division the Mississippi Valley State University Devilettes in the first round.
The SWAC tournament begins on Wednesday, November 1st with the post season banquet where the All-SWAC team will be announced. Play begins on Thursday, Nov. 2, with the 1 p.m. game between SU and Valley. Then at 3:00 pm the Western Division second seed, Prairie View A&M University, will play the third seed from the Eastern Division, Jackson State University. Grambling State University and Alabama A&M University both earned first place byes for coming in first place in their respective divisions.
The winner of the SWAC soccer tournament will receive the bid to the NCAA soccer tournament.
